After that night in the parlor, Father spent less time with me, and more with my brother. There was a newfound fire in Father’s eyes. He taught my brother the ways of his business, explaining concepts of sales and marketing and production. I found it all quite dull. Still, I feigned interest whenever possible in hopes of being included in these conversations, though my opinion was rarely asked for.

If my brother was full of himself under Mother’s dotage, he became impossible once Father paid him similar attention. At breakfast, he would open the paper, just like Father, and announce that he had a full day planned, and that he hoped dinner was up to his standards. Mother thought this adorable, and did her best to accommodate his every desire. We even added a full-time cook to the staff, so that her ‘men’ would never be hungry. I was never once asked what I wanted the cook to prepare, except on my birthday, and Mother’s approval was required even then.

“I wish I had Father all to myself,” I said, one afternoon as Bridget bathed me in the claw-foot tub. “I wish my brother was gone.”

“Be careful what you wish for,” she chided, squeezing tepid water over my head with a thick sponge. “If the fairies hear you, they might grant your wish and steal your brother clean away!”

“Good!” I said.

I didn’t know much about fairies. There were some picture books in the Boston shops, though Mother wouldn’t let me buy anything so silly. But if fairies could make my brother go away, even for a day, I wanted to believe in them.

I even created a rhyme, and recited it one night before falling asleep:

Faeries, Faeries, take my brother. So I can have my father and mother.
